with punk monks anna slowiaczek & tyler red-dog grant who indulged in a naked alley doona dance. this is but one scene. there were many others. with different players. all surreally clad in uniform white. deja vu.

the street is our canvas. our public domain. our playground. this is where we make our art. to share.

it's a blindingly sun-filled saturday morning on oxford street. a handful of punk monks are at the markets. the lovely taylor square sustainable farmers markets where we played every thursday night for the duration of october.

lou steer from ESP gallery coaxes succinct word beats from the mic. her heartfelt character driven stories are witty & locally relevant. i'm not the only person laughing out loud. i am probably the only person who pisses my pants however. hurray for TENA.

today we've returned to the scene of our past street party crimes to add a little village ambience...

or a lot. inspired by lou, i break my spoken word bubble jamming an assorted jumble of love-worn haikus

and weetbix has a green drink while he mixes up sounds of the day. sometimes he has to adjust his output because we're somewhat too fast-paced for the slow vibe & the clothes swap beneath us is quite genteel. i blame the spirulina & we try to act all incognito.

noone cares. it's saturday morning on oxford street after all.

meanwhile andrew/andros & rebecca are live arting up a storm on yonder heritage fence. there's an extraordinary amount of pigeon shit at the base. oddly enough it perfectly matches the undercoat of our painted panels.

into the derelict bowels of what once was the production factory of shoes & tennis racquets. the long abandoned and still surviving slazenger dunlop building. abandoned by some.

exploring through the warrenlike tunnels reveals increasingly storm damaged caverns which invite dappled rays of neon light dancing with the layers of painted tagged love. magic eyes abound.

it can't be long before this treasure trove of aerosol celebration is no more. in the interim it stands like an irreverent totem much like a modern day chauvet. the moving sun, the fire of old enabling shadows to embolden & animate the art. the sea of cans which litter the ground testament to those who have come & created before.

each corner turned reveals endless discoveries.

last thursday [october 06] saw the wet weather launch of the pop up night markets at taylor square for which i'm curating the vibe for with the punk monk propaganda team headed up with co-conspirators craig bunkwaa & stevie dunstan. it's a community microcosmos, space for the senses to be soaked & soothed in a mild edible, tactile, visual & aural orgasm. baby steps towards a long distance street party dream.

below is a pic of bunkwaa looking awesome & me emulating an autocratic melted wax doll. if nothing else i will spend the rest of my life avoiding that particular facial expression. stevie somehow escaped evidential humiliation. aren't photos grand?

we're collaborating with the wonderful sydney sustainable markets which emerged from humble yet aspirational saturday morning beginnings [stevie & i were there for the christening & still have our recycled city council silk banner bags to prove it] and are going from strength to strength now stretching wings to a new tomorrow via the sydney crave food festival. undeterred by the incessant rain the people still come...

in addition to a handful of incredible food stalls [no gozleme in sight] which sold out despite the on/off opening downpours our semi-usual projection bombing of experimental light onto buildings and spaces with or without people can be witnessed each week. this time round we'll be illuminating entire heritage buildings with our well-loved OHPs.

rotating interactive workshops designed to provide a hands on artistic experience for the curious & adventurous. this time, recycled zines! as seen here last week, sustainable jewellery mentored by highly skilled & versatile sydney artist christie torrington.

this coming week, christie's handiwork can be witnessed with live illustration whilst playing alchemist with the rest of the uber punk monk artists via our grateful dead re-appropriated & signature liquid light projections as she fuses both analogue disciplines into a wondrous sight whilst combating ambient spill from street lights in taylor square. we'll also be bombing ground zero with video animations you can dance on in the fleeting shadows. kill switch anyone?

each week we can promise live music to complement the existing oxford street soundscape... featuring two different folk artists combined with our own handpicked & much loved DJs/experimental noise artists [defender sound & interstellar starfish].

not to mention our regular live art collaboration with street artists. last round: bunkwaa, konsumterra & andros in some sort of epic pirate panel battle. who knows what will be on the agenda this time with additional moonlighting visitors armed with poscas who come & go in the night?

you can always spot a punk monk event-side by our telltale hands. follow the colour trail & you'll find us. somewhere between our makeshift dancefloor pulsing rainbow waves of light, hub of quietly humming artists, the sultry chai tent & inlet of industrious marquees spewing out seductive aromas of yum. despite what our mothers told us, we still like to play with our food.

welcome to perth. capital city of the australian resources boom, the centre of gravity on the west coast which in many ways echoes the spirit of original mining mentalities throughout history. my new sometime home base as i amongst others seek personal fame & fortune buying into the ubiquitous fly in, fly out culture at the expense of the environment, one way or another. it may as well be us right...

we [punk monk propaganda] had an art installation at sydney university as part of our verge festival presence this year [we also curated the opening party with major raiser]. the shipping containers were dumped on campus and we were fortunate enough to be granted one to play with for the duration of the fest.

this is what the exterior of our container looked like thanks to much loved street artists konsumterra & boots who kindly sexed it up for us. inside was an entirely different matter and quite a separate conversation which will be pursued later.

it all started when kate taylor started thinking in UV & i was channeling shamanistic temples. somehow by closing night we were at naked roller derby girls and paint. quite an obvious progression really.

ky-lee menzies is not as innocent as she looks in any of the matters above. but this is a well earned beer. because unbeknownst to us by the end of the festival, all the paste-ups had to come down...

it took the punk monk chicks six hours collectively to scrape those suckers off. while i gadded about at my art exhibition opening they did the hard yards. i dropped by with buckets & grabbed a couple of peace-keeping snaps en route. the air was damp & heavy.

although these hotties manage to make the task look vaguely fun, it wasn't nearly as much as what happened the night before [see below]. and that's before we got under the lights.

a test cut of my little avant garde punk monk film G.L.O.W. will be projection bombed on the back streets of tortuga studios, st peters for in the night garden at sydney fringe festival this friday.

it's a whole different POV of roller derby girls. uncontainable & unforgettable.

now that we've escaped the threatened charges of public indecent exposure & the glue stains have worn off one thing is for certain: roller derby girls meet punk monk chicks are extremely good sorts/sports. at least the ones we play naked painted ladies with.

i'm part of a group exhibition as a subset of the marrickville contemporary art prize soon. which is an incredible inner west initiative championed by ATVP gallery where i've exhibited a couple of times before.

my concept was literally thrown together on deadline & and was surprisingly short-listed into the exhibition. short version = i am duly honoured to be featured at ESP gallery in the fringe dwellers exhibition in fine company. launch date ie. let's drink wine together = sept 10. daytime. BYO: rose coloured glasses.

my film project is entitled "anomie". it's a short experimental film & series of images utilising my bank of lovingly inherited 16mm found footage fused with experimental original noise composed specifically for the piece. that will be today. ahem. here's a sneak preview before i furiously go to work on the project for the next 24 hours.

a peek at the behind the scenes process + chaotic source book of inspiration:

i'm working on a new project for punk monk propaganda right now to be unveiled tomorrow night at jurassic lounge. a stop motion episodic tale of earth, evolution, religion, consumerism, oh and dinosaurs.

it's an ongoing collaboration between myself & and the incredibly talented & bodacious craig bunker AKA bunkwaa. AWOL monk meets bunkwaa. again. we've been hanging out together a bit of late. naturally we're way behind schedule which completely normalises things. i'm not sure who is worse. it's a tough call.

it didn't help that my car set on fire as we drove through newtown in search of art supplies & food to sustain us on our epic journey yesterday. we're pretty pissed off that we left the corner shop studio practically naked. ie. no cameras or phones. in this obsessive social media age that means it did not happen.

this faux pax will not be repeated. yesterday was a minefield of missed film opportunities. so last night i grafted my DSLR directly into my torso fused with chocolate mousse & marscapone, so now my entire life can be captured through a 50mm lens lomo style. shooting through skin is a bit like using vaseline. a 1980s soft porn karaoke clip.

you introduced me to this song. sitting beside me in the car on our roadtrip you turned up the stereo playing your handcrafted mixtape & said "this is you" as i drove us, roof down 120 kms an hour into the uplifting winter breeze, hair flying. away from the city.

it's now the highest rotation track playing in the studio while i pretend to work, fastidiously analyzing lyrics, thinking about the sometime subjugation of independence when personalities come together, thinking about us. thinking about you. imagining psychotic as sexy. it is a sexy song.

it's closing night [sunday july 24, 2011] and my short "salome's picnic" has screened for the last time to a packed theatre with the john waters narrated "of dolls and murder". they go together rather nicely.

my little erotic necrophile film written, directed, produced, designed by & starring me [yes, i'm the semi-naked sick bitch], is up for an IF award but naturally i forget to tell anyone.

it's time to drink. more. the wagon wheels have long since fallen off. but just for the night.

to cap off what had been an intensely productive punk monk propaganda fueled/sleep-deprived july, us punk monk chicks run an impromptu photo shoot for the band the night before i leave town for perth.

originally intended as an outdoor shoot, the weather has other ideas... nothing some green bubble wrap & hot pink couches can't take care of in the corner shop living room. ky & i are mother creatures of adaptive invention.

perth, western australia, is the undisputed mecca of flavoured milk. in no other state is masters spearmint milk available. but why?

when one goes to perth it's like stepping into a time loop & going back fifteen years. the pace & palate seem somewhat slower. by no means an entirely bad thing. unless you're confined by the claustrophobic suburban sensibilities meets 2D nouveaux rich flash-in-the-pan consumerist ideology & utterly desperate to escape...

one of my best friends, stevie hails from this place. he left as soon as he could. and his brother not far behind him. despite the open-minded view on strange lactose-based drinks, perth is no oxford street. in fact perth is seemingly so far from sydney that my unwired internet did not work there. no WA coverage they told me when i rang the 1300 number seeking an interwebs fix. seems it is practically another world. apparently the most remote state in the world... where remnants of previous lifeforms can still be found. amongst the living. is spearmint milk the new dinosaur?

my first introduction to this hangover of 1950s soda milk bar culture came via stevie. although the milk bars were nowhere in sight, commercial fridges burst with this stuff every convenience store i entered.

all i could think as i tenuously embraced dry july is how good it would be with vodka. previously tried & tested back home & a ubiquitous mantra we lushes [ping stevie, fee & ky] hold near & dear on the east coast. in the meantime we are forced to drink our vodka unmixed until ex-patriot perthians successfully lobby for interstate mint milk love. in the immortal words of cyndi lauper: if i could turn back time [there would be lashings of vodka & spearmint milk for everyone]...

city beach, perth. my borrowed camper van is parked facing west on the edge of the indian ocean. i'm here for rev [revelation - perth international film festival, for the uninitiated]. my mobile film "salome's picnic" plays closing night [tonight] sandwiched between william burroughs & john waters. it's already played to a large crowd in the main theatre the week prior. as far as i'm concerned, i've made it & could die happy now. what magnum opus?

i'm also here to shoot a film of my exploits. although the adventures keep getting in the way. consequently there's very little footage. a perfect excuse to return.

the van belongs to my beloved sister gina. who unexpectedly gifted her to me when i rocked up planning on shooting a gutter-edge gypsy porn flick on my mobile when i got off the plane. the van slightly messes with my harmony korine vibe. but not much. i can still sing for my supper if need be.

as if by divine providence for a barrage of unanswered requests [which have been long since been returned to sender], all my ships seem to have come in at once. the horizon is littered with them. they sit. silently waiting on the darkest blue rim. in a single canon snap i destroy the phantoms. now their collective soul is in my possession. collection day is nigh.

the beach is practically deserted. what would be considered a balmy warm day by sydney-siders throughout most seasons is viewed by western australians as cold. they visibly shiver except the permanent beach folk, lifesavers & their ilk. i can count my footsteps in the lustrous sand. and wipe the sand off from between my toes before embarking my mobile home. we waghorn chicks are quite house proud.

i like these guys. but wonder what a beach inspector really does? WA seems to be grossly over-policed. i'm sure it's "for all our own good". god only knows i need protecting from myself.

suddenly i feel much safer. like when the perth CBD cop yelled "redman redman" all "the shining-like" at gina & i when we deigned to cross the road [coincidentally free of traffic] before the lights instructed the braindead citizens to. we escaped the threatened one hundred dollar fee. authoritarian tosser. sneak preview: it doesn't look like much now but welcome to frame one, layer one of the new stop motion visual narrative project em + me cooked up in the punk monk labs.

meet part 2 of our chronological abstract project for canberra band fun machine [toxic]: we wanted to take on an interesting endeavour & push some boundaries coming off our tried & true liquid light event laurels a bit. challenge is good for the soul.

the incredible punk monks in only a week are producing five films in mini teams [emma sanderson, me [victoria waghorn], ky [ky-lee menzies + dave cheng, kate taylor + siobhan lady pinkton-white, chris tamm + donna hogan] to launch at good god bar july 13 whilst we further develop our concept to collaborate with younes bachir and strings attached for OJO at underbelly arts festival on cockatoo island less than a handful of days later [july 16].

there are not enough hours in the day or people to draw, cut or film things. if you want to work with us please step up, we'd love to integrate you into our workshop teams. rust and punk monks never sleep.
